Look, I’m not going to lie, most record stores are pretty damn similar. They smell the same (dusty and musty). They have the same color scheme (various shades of brown). They are usually run by the same kind of people (white guys wearing old band t-shirts). They are decorated the same (rare records and vintage gig posters covering every wall). Now that’s not a knock, I love that about record stores. It is precisely this profound comfort and familiarity that has me seeking out record stores everywhere I go. It doesn’t matter how big the store is or where the store is, all that matters is the music. But Chain Reaction Records is not like most record stores.
What to expect at Chain Reaction Records
A few miles from Downtown Denver, on a stretch of road consisting of tire shops, bail bondsmen, and gun stores, is the humble and unapologetically punk Chain Reaction Records. While most record stores never transcended a 70’s rock aesthetics, filling their shop with tie-dye Grateful Dead tapestries and vintage stereo equipment, Chain Reaction takes a different approach. Instead, customers are greeted with skate decks and an endearing mannequin sporting a gas mask and studded leather thong.
In 2014, local hardcore legends Josh Lent and his brother Justin launched Chain Reaction Records in Lakewood, after gaining near-icon status in Denver’s hardcore scene over the last 25 years as the founders of Clusterfux. As you might have guessed, Chain Reaction specializes in punk and metal records.
The atmosphere here is about as relaxed as it gets, despite the intensity of the decor and music playing. Employees will likely be rocking out and talking about music while you browse, that is if you don’t pass them skateboarding in the parking lot on the way in. Aside from the record selection, there are also substantial cassette offerings, t-shirts and other various odds and music-related ends. The store doubles as a skate shop as well, so you can browse some records and maybe pick up a new set of trucks for your board while you’re in.
Selection at Chain Reaction Records
The record selection itself is modest, especially compared to other record shops throughout metro Denver. However this is a rare case where smaller is actually better. While most record stores try to have something for everyone, Chain Reaction
For those just delving into the world of metal and punk music, the store might seem intimidating at first. There’s a lot of satanic imagery so be sure to bring your pocket bible just in case. Despite an affinity for all things hellish, the employees are incredibly kind. Everyone here is eager to discuss music or give recommendations if you are having trouble finding something for your collection.
Speaking of recommendations, this is perhaps the best place in the state to go to discover hardcore bands. Chain Reaction has their own record label which features some of Denvers local punk and hardcore acts. Records from bands on the Chain Reaction record label have a dedicated bin in the store. Aside from their own bands, the store does an excellent job of buying directly from the bands they sell in store. While most record stores will be ordering records from various major distributors, Chain Reaction works directly with labels and bands. This not only helps cut down on costs but helps support the artists and allows for an incredibly unique stock. All of this adds up to what is by far the most unique record store in the state. Simply put, there are records here that you can’t find with in 1,000 miles.
Pricing
As far as pricing is concerned, there’s definitely no sticker shock here. Plenty of hard to find records at fair prices.
Chain Reaction Records is without a doubt the most unique record store in Denver. The store is a staple in the metal and punk music scenes in Denver and refuses to compromise and become just like every other record store in town. Many people reminisce about the old Denver before marijuana legalization accelerated cultural change. For those seeking authenticity in a shifting landscape, Chain Reaction Records might be your best bet.
Check it out and don’t forget to follow the stores’ number 1 rule: Don’t be a dick.
My Take on Chain Reaction Records
Chain Reaction Records is pretty much the only niche record store in the state of Colorado. There are some stores throughout metro Denver that have certain genres or kinds of records that they might specialize in, but no one is as specialized the way Chain Reaction is. Truly, any punk/hardcore/metal record collector should check this place out. The selection here is quite small but the quality more than makes up for it. There were dozens of records here that I had never seen anywhere else. The layout and decor of the shop is so authentically haphazard it’s actually kind of endearing.
